This signed print features an original Wolf-Moose Project photograph by John Vucetich, capturing the Old Gray Guy, wolf #93, the alpha male of Isle Royale's Middle Pack during the early 2000s, when the pack dominated the island's wolf population.
Researchers recognized the Old Gray Guy year after year by his large size and distinctive light-colored coat. During one winter survey, scientists watched from their observation aircraft as he paused along the shore of Siskiwit Lake before leading his pack into the forest. Once the wolves had disappeared among the trees, the research team landed to collect the scat he had left behind, preserving it until advances in DNA analysis made it possible to unlock an extraordinary discovery.
The genetic analysis revealed that the Old Gray Guy had emigrated from Canada by crossing an ice bridge to Isle Royale. His arrival introduced much-needed genetic diversity into the island's isolated wolf population, and his descendants played a vital role in sustaining the population during the first decade of the 21st century. His story transformed scientists' understanding of the importance of genetic diversity in small, isolated wildlife populations.
