This exclusive limited-edition print reproduction of Gendron Jensen’s original lithograph, “Minongers,” offers a rare opportunity to bring a piece of Isle Royale’s natural history into your home while supporting the ongoing work of the Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Project.
Created during Jensen’s 1994 Artist-in-Residence experience at Isle Royale National Park, “Minongers” reflects his deep connection to the stories preserved within the island’s wildlife remains. Having previously documented the bones of a decomposing blue whale in the Bay of Fundy, Jensen arrived on Isle Royale with a unique appreciation for the quiet narratives held by animal remains. During his time on the island, he spent hours studying the skulls collected at Bangsund Cabin, waiting for one to “speak” to him.
That inspiration became “Minongers,” a masterful stone lithograph created by hand using a wax pencil on smooth Bavarian limestone. The artwork pairs the skull of a legendary bull moose, whose antlers spanned four feet and whose 14-year life left its mark on Isle Royale’s history, with the skull of a wolf that Jensen envisioned as an alpha female, representing the strength and resilience of the island’s wolf population.
Only 20 museum-quality print reproductions will be produced. Each print will be individually signed by Isle Royale Wolf-Moose Project scientists Rolf O. Peterson, John Vucetich, and Sarah Hoy, creating a unique connection between this artwork and the decades of research that have revealed the remarkable relationship between wolves, moose, and their island ecosystem.
